This new cd is packed with 15 songs, some self-penned and co-written, as well as songs crossing different genres from Country, Irish/Newfoundland, R&B and pop in styles that Kevin is well known for and delivering thought provoking songs that tell a story.
Some of the new songs, which were written by Kevin, or co written with some writers not known in the music circles, however warranted a good listen and eventual studio inclusion.
1. “Son, I Don’t Know You Well Enough To Miss You If You Were Gone”. Written by Kevin, this is a title that came from a Nashville session that Kevin was recording around 1995. They were sitting around chatting when a conversation came up regarding Rodney Crowell and Roseanne Cash (Daughter of Johnny Cash) who were dating in 1977- Rodney was 27. Rodney and Roseanne had moved in together, which Johnny was not in favor of at that time. So Rodney and Roseanne received what Rodney called a summons, Ha to fly to Jamaica to visit Johnny and June. As bedtime approached and the topic of sleep arrangements came up, Rodney suggested he and Roseanne would sleep together that night to which Johnny replied “Son I don’t Know You Well Enough To Miss You If You Were Gone. We all laughed, and that line never left me through the years. I always thought it would be a good line in a song. When I was getting ready for this album, The line came to me and I thought you know, maybe all that was one of those drinking, made up stories. Thanks to google, I found the whole story which the song is based on. Have a read https://www.uncut.co.uk/features/part-two-texas-country-singer-rodney-crowell-37649/ .
As a foot note, my father Tony Collins was a great singer who had to fill in for Johnny Cash, who at the time had many vices, and failed to show up for a scheduled performance at Blueroom Club located an American Naval Base in Argentia, Newfoundland Canada in the early 60’s. They never forgot it and said you would swear it was Jonny himself singing. He took part in a hunting trip as well in Millertown. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.988224481386257&type=3&_rdr
2. My Lonely Deserted Small Village Below. Written by Kevin, this song and title was inspired by a good friend Mary Harney from Dunhill, Ireland during the COVID 19 lockdown, that changed the world forever. I heard a ding (notification) on my Ipad one night, and when I opened Facebook, Mary Harney had posted a picture of the empty lonely street, on a moonlit night where she owns and operates Harney’s Pub. She said “The Moon bows low on My Lonely Deserted Village”. It really struck a sad chord, the empty feeling the COVID shutdown left in us all.
3. Shoes Of A Fisherman- This song came to Kevin hand delivered by, an RCMP officer Todd Hussey, who was stationed in Placentia a number of years ago. He was then posted to Prince Edward Island where he heard someone sing this song written by Pete Blanding, Shoes Of A Fisherman and thought this was a song for Kevin Collins. Kevin was at home one day when a police cruiser pulled in, and Kevin thought what did I do, Ha. This was the delivery of the song.
4. The Old House Still- Written by Valerie Wiseman from Fortune Harbour, NL.. It has a very relatable, real sobering story of looking back through life after making a tough move to leave the safe, quaint life style as many more have done, in spite of a parents plea to stay put. But the lure of the big city and dreams proved stronger. But after many vivid dreams and years later, a visit to the old house and the simple beautiful, surroundings captured the fond memories a path in life brushed over. And as the song states “If I Heeded Mother’s Words as I Was Leaving, I’d Be Standing In The Old House Still.
5. Dancing On A Saturday Night- Written By Kevin, this song was written as a result of the phenomenon of the hugely popular dance craze sweeping Ireland’s country music scene for a number of years. It is an experience to witness and be a part of.
6. Who Will Watch The Homeplace-Written by Kate Long (USA) is a heartbreaker of a song that simply put, questions the responsibility of stewards of our worldly possessions left behind after we depart this life.
